Purpose of the VCASE Policy and Legislation Committee
The VCASE Policy and Legislation Committee seeks to monitor, disseminate, collaborate, and advocate regarding statewide and national policy and legislative initiatives affecting students with disabilities, their families, and the staff that serve them. The voice of special education administrators and practitioners must be included as policy affecting our students, families, and staff is considered at the state and federal level. The committee leadership and members:

Develop a VCASE Policy and Legislation Platform approved by the VCASE Executive Board

Research and analyze the impacts of proposed bills and policies.

Partner with CEC allies and other education stakeholders.

Build trusting, honest relationships with legislators and policy leaders.

Inform, engage, and involve VCASE members in advocating our positions

Communicate effectively the VCASE positions to legislators, policymakers, boards, commissions, and other individuals​.
Activities of the Policy and Legislative Committee

Early input on bills legislators are considering (summer/fall prior to session).

Almost daily attendance at the Virginia General Assembly subcommittees and committees, January to February or March.

Coordinate VCASE and Virginia CEC participation at the annual CEC/CASE Special Education Legislative Summit in Washington DC.
